With a noble scent and beautifully dark green colour, the tea is named after one of the seven tea farms in Uji that used to produce teas exclusively for the shoguns. Umonji boasts a sweet, mellow taste which slowly disperses on the palate. The refreshing aftertaste makes it a popular tea served in ryotei or kaiseki restaurants as after dinner tea.

The Story

Growing matcha in the dark improves the texture and colour of the tea as by avoiding exposure to the sun. The leaves change its structure to try to absorb more sunlight by becoming broader and thinner, which allows the harvested leaves to be easily grounded into a fine powder.
